Milan exhibitions open in August 2026

Short answer: almost all of them, and August is the best month to see them. Kiefer in the Sala delle Cariatidi, Clemente at the Triennale, Cao Fei and Mona Hatoum at Fondazione Prada, Milan’s first Picasso at the Museo del Novecento, Pomodoro at the Gallerie d’Italia. The same shows that will have a queue in September.

The Kiefer is worth the trip on its own: more than forty large canvases on the women of alchemy, made for the Sala delle Cariatidi — the bombed, never-restored hall of Palazzo Reale. It is the artist’s gift to Milan for the Olympic year, and the room does half the work.

And one that closes in August

Maria Cristina Carlini, Materie viventi — two monumental sculptures in the Cortile d’Onore and the garden of Palazzo Reale, 10 July to 30 August. It is outdoors and the courtyard is freely walkable: the easiest thing to see in an empty city, and after the 30th it is gone.

Three things that make the difference

In August several venues cut their hours or close for a few days. Check the individual venue’s own site the day before, not a third-party calendar.
The Fondazione Prada ticket also covers the Osservatorio in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele: two sites, one ticket.
On Thursday evenings many spaces stay open until 10 or 11 pm. In the August heat, that is the right hour.

Planning the day

Palazzo Reale, the Museo del Novecento, the Gallerie d’Italia and the Fondazione Prada Osservatorio are all around Piazza Duomo and can be done on foot in a single day. Brera and Palazzo Citterio are minutes apart. Fondazione Prada in Largo Isarco and the Triennale at Parco Sempione each want their own trip.

From the San Siro district the M5 reaches the centre in about twenty minutes, and in August the metro is empty. Staying out here costs neighbourhood money rather than Duomo money, with the difference that at the end of the day you come back to a tree-lined street instead of a square that echoes.
