Milan in August: what is actually open
Short answer: far less than June, far more than you have been told. The museums stay open, the Castello screens films outdoors for three weeks, the Latin Festival runs to the 15th and Serie A restarts on the 22nd. What closes is neighbourhood shops and half the restaurants.
August is two different months
Milan in August splits in two, and the halves do not resemble each other. From the 1st to the 21st the city slows down: little traffic, free parking, local shops shuttered for the holidays, and a calm that visitors find slightly unreal. From the 22nd everything restarts at once — league football, returning residents, offices — and within a week Milan is Milan again.
If you are choosing when to come, that is the information that matters: the first stretch gives you the city almost to yourself with fewer services, the second gives you a normal, busy city.
What is on, with dates
- Tutto il Bello del Cinema — 1 to 25 August, Cortile delle Armi at the Castello Sforzesco: cult films and film-concerts under the stars.
- Milano Latin Festival — until 15 August at MIND Live Theatre, in the former Expo site: concerts, dancing and Latin American food, Wednesday to Sunday.
- Ferragosto, Saturday the 15th — in 2026 it falls on a Saturday, so it opens a long weekend through Sunday the 16th.
- Serie A, from the 22nd — the league is back: Inter–Monza on Saturday the 22nd at 18:30 and Milan–Venezia in the round of 28–31, both at San Siro. Because of the heat, the first three matchdays kick off only at 18:30 and 20:45.
- Gin & Tonic Festival — 28 to 30 August at the Ex Macello.
- Milano è Viva — the city council programme puts concerts and shows in parks and squares through late September.
The museums are open
This is the most expensive misconception about Milan in August. Palazzo Reale, Museo del Novecento, the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Castello Sforzesco, Mudec, the Aquarium, the Natural History Museum: open, including the 15th, on holiday hours. The big summer exhibitions run into September. What shuts is the boutiques, not the collections — and the CityLife Shopping District has confirmed it closes on 15 August 2026, so do not build that Saturday around it.
One practical note: August holiday hours change from year to year and from one museum to the next. Check the individual venue's own site in the days before, not a guide's.
The San Siro tour, with a caveat
The Giuseppe Meazza stadium runs its tour in August too, but August is pitch-maintenance and stage-build season: the route can change and some areas may be closed. It is worth doing — this is the last full season before the new stadium's building site changes everything — but check the day before. The tour guide.
What to pack for
Humid heat, often above thirty degrees, with short violent thunderstorms in the afternoon. Air conditioning and a residential street where the evening actually cools down matter more than being close to the Duomo. In August the neighbourhood beats the centre for that reason too: trees, quiet, and nobody queueing.

It depends what you want. From the 1st to the 21st the city is calm, you queue for nothing and prices are lower, but many local services are shut. From the 22nd Serie A restarts and Milan becomes a full, working city within a week.
Are there matches at San Siro in August 2026?
Yes, two: Inter–Monza on Saturday 22 August at 18:30 and Milan–Venezia in the round spread from Friday 28 to Monday 31 August. Before the 22nd the stadium hosts no matches, and in the Coppa Italia both Inter and Milan only enter at the round of 16, in December and January.
